Disciplinary Issues – Canning in School

The disciplinary issues in Malaysia are increasing in a large number day by day. Why is this happening?? It is sad to say that this problem is becoming worst because of the education system imposing such terrible disciplinary act towards the students, such as canning and slapping. It should be allowed but not excessively.
In my opinion, I personally agree with the saying “Spare the Rod and Spoil the Child” which the Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi himself would seem to agree with. Prime minister himself expanded the power of canning students to all teachers; only the disciplinary masters and principals are allowed to do so. According to Datuk Seri Abdullah, care must be taken to avoid abuse, he also sad that, he would not stop the ministry from implementing canning in schools as long as it is not excessive. The National Unity Community Development minister Siti Zaharah Sulaiman said that yesterday those children should be canned in serious cases. In addition to that, the Ministry had in ruled that only principals and discipline masters could use the rod. All those citation and references above was taken from the net.
Why canning is carried out widely in schools for the smallest mistake is because, students are disrespectful to their teachers and headmasters. Youngsters nowadays are getting disrespectful; I blame the parents for that kind of act. But teachers in school should not just cane to correct them, instead they will only become wilder and uncontrollable after such punishment is impost towards them. This just goes to show that respect is a virtue taught at home not instilled by cane. Teachers nowadays cane student because they know students fear canning in school. The effect of that punishment, is when this student grows up, they beat other schoolmates because they tend to think their school mates are scat to be beaten, and this lead to gangsterism. This is a vicious cycle taught by our education program.
Public canning in schools should be carried out in a way which follows the procedures strictly, for an example there should be strict guidelines in regards to all type of offences, such as disrespect shown to teachers and headmasters, destruction of the school property, public fighting. Teachers should not be given the license for canning the students for the smallest excuse.
I would like to conclude by asking a question generally, are we so deprived of our own self-esteem, that we in turn think that other s can only be made understand things through the medium of the cane??? A teacher cannot impose any punishment on any student; it would become an offence for which the teacher would be punishable as an ordinary criminal act. As said above, canning should be allowed, but not excessively towards student.
